Travel Soccer Overview

Our Philosophy

Travel soccer is a competitive level of soccer whereas in-house is recreational. Travel soccer starts at the U9 age level, 2nd or 3rd grade, and can continue through high school. Typically travel teams are open only to South Park Township residents. However, exceptions can be made.

Travel soccer is the next level of soccer after our in-house league and includes an increased focus on the technical and tactical development of players. A high level of commitment to the team is required to participate in this program.  The program provides talented and promising players enhanced exposure to the game, the opportunity for additional coaching and the chance to compete against teams of similar talent.

Commitment

As previously noted, travel soccer is a commitment by the player and the family.  Teams play in a Fall and Spring session which makes a complete playing season, typically 8 Sunday afternoons per session. The fall session generally starts at the end of August and continues through the first week of November. The spring session generally starts at the end of March and continues through June. Travel teams may practice twice a week in the fall and spring.  SPSA travel teams play teams from other communities from southwestern PA, parts of northwestern West Virginia and southeastern Ohio.

The SPSA makes every attempt to provide every child wishing to play travel soccer the opportunity to do so.  However, certain circumstances such as roster size limits can prevent this. Therefore, if your child is not placed on a travel team, we will automatically switch your registration to our in house program and refund the cost difference if you wish.

The SPSA will conduct player elevations to determine placement of your child on a travel team.  These evaluations will be conducted in May or June for the upcoming fall/spring season.

Team uniform kits are an additional cost and must be purchased by the family prior to the start of the season and must be worn for all games.  A uniform kit consists of two team colored jerseys, one pair of shorts and two pair of socks to match their team color jersey.  The SPSA uniform kit changes every two years.  After you are placed on a team the coach for that team will contact the parent to inform them of the placement and give instructions on how to purchase the uniform kit.  Currently, soccer.com supplies the uniform kit for the SPSA travel soccer program. Please check out the soccer.com link to access our team store to purchase travel uniform pieces and SPSA Spirit Wear.

Age Group

In accordance with the United State Soccer Federation mandate, the SPSA has changed to age grouping by birth year. Previously, age groups were determined based on players born between August 1 and July 31. The change to calendar year age groups will reflect the calendar/birth year, or January 1 to December 31.

Travel Soccer Divisions

The SPSA belongs to the PA West Soccer league (District 4/South District) and there are three divisions in which the SPSA will enter travel soccer teams to play in within this league: Division 6, Division 5 and Division 4. Division 6 is considered to be developmental. Division 5 and Division 4 are both competitive divisions with Division 4 being the highest level. Division 4 teams may travel anywhere within the PA West jurisdiction including Erie, State College and West Virginia. Division 5 and Division 6 teams will generally only travel to following locations, with some exceptions:
